FAQs

Business
Why Fiber Optics?
Fiber optics is a technology where laser-generated pulses of light are transmitted over hair-thin strands of glass fiber. Because light travels faster and has a vastly larger bandwidth than radio frequency transmission over copper fiber optics make everything faster. Uploading, downloading, image quality and phone clarity are all improved by the use of fiber optics.

What do other communication utilities use?
Traditional communications companies in the majority of cases use some amount of copper lines to transmit their signal to your business.

Specifically, copper is susceptible to heat, weather and many other environmental factors, such as electromagnetic interference, which can interfere with your services. So, many weather conditions may affect the signal arriving at your business, causing outages and slower downloading speeds.

Also, the network of most other utilities consists of a mix of aerial and underground cable. Aerial has obvious issues, pole hits, lighting, dove season. And depending on how deep the underground cable is placed causes it to is susceptible to damage.

RST’s 100% fiber optic network is all underground, typically at a depth greater than 7 feet. This usually insures that our facilities are beneath other utilities.

Thanks to its speed, clarity and reliability, RST Fiber is the best way to deliver Internet, phone and video to your business, plain and simple.

RST Business Internet
Why does my business really need such high speed?
There are two types of businesses: those that want to stay the same, and those that want to move forward.

Modern day business is increasingly more dependent on reliable, fast data connections.

In addition to everyday functions such as email and possibly interfacing with offsite locations, new applications such as video conferencing require sufficient bandwidth in both directions, which RST provides.

Ever try and upload a large file (CAD drawings, photos, etc.) from your business? Well now imagine doing it in seconds rather than minutes or hours.

Does RST Internet require a modem?
The Optical Network Terminal (ONT) that RST provides to deliver our service takes the place of a traditional modem.

RST Phone
RST provides a complete spectrum of business telephone services, from single lines, to more specialized connection to your existing PBX or our hosted “cloud based” VOIP PBX solutions.

If my power goes out, will RST Phone still work?
We’ve installed a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) in conjunction with our equipment at your business, which will provide power for RST’s electronics for up to eight hours. So, as long as your power is restored within eight hours, your RST Internet, Phone and Video services will remain operational. Keep in mind that you are still dependent on having power available for your devices, such as your internal telephone system, phones, data router, computers, etc. unless you provide UPS powering to this equipment.

Features
You name a feature you desire and one of RST’s phone offerings will be able to provide it. Please speak to one of our representatives for specific information.

RST Video
What makes RST Fiber Optics different from cable and other TV and Internet providers?
RST Fiber Optics brings fiber optics all the way to your home, which means that you have access to virtually unlimited bandwidth. The result is incredibly fast Internet speeds available and virtually unlimited TV options including incredible picture quality. Typically the video programming we provide is transmitted as it is received from the programmer, we do not use “compression” typically used by other providers to pack as many channels as they can into the bandwidth they have available.

RST Fiber brings fiber optics all the way to your business, which means that you have access to virtually unlimited bandwidth. The result is not only incredibly fast Internet speeds but a tremendous amount of available bandwidth for video.

Typically the high definition video programming we provide is transmitted as it is received from the broadcaster or programmer. We do not use “compression,” which is typically used by other providers to pack as many channels as they can into the bandwidth they have available. The result is video as you have never seen it before.

What do cable companies use?
Traditional communications companies use copper lines to transfer their signal to your home. While they may advertise the use of fiber optics, RST Fiber is the area’s only provider that uses 100% fiber optics – that is, fiber optics all the way to your home, eliminating the interferences that come with copper connections.

Specifically, copper is susceptible to heat, weather and many other environmental factors, such as electromagnetic interference, which can interfere with your connection. So, many weather conditions may affect the signal entering your home, causing slower downloading speeds and lower picture quality on your television. Also, since copper networks have active electronics in the system, there is a dependency on outside electrical power from the power company as well as the possibility of signal distortion loss of data and a general degradation of quality. Fiber optic networks do not have these limitations.

And when it comes to upload speeds, fiber optics cannot be matched. Because traditional copper lines focus much of their available bandwidth on sending signals out, they’re extremely limited when it comes to uploading new information. Fiber optics, however, are capable of producing upload speeds that are just as fast as download speeds, and the RST Fiber Optic Network does just that. With RST Fiber, you can count on the speed you need to upload photos, music and movies faster.

Why should I choose fiber optics?
Thanks to its speed, clarity and reliability, RST Fiber is the best way to enjoy Internet, video and phone service in your home or office, plain and simple.

Installation
How many rooms are included in the new installation?
Installation includes RST Fiber Optic products everywhere you have an existing connection. This includes all existing phone jacks, Internet and cable connections in the various locations in your home.

Is there a cost to add or remove features or services later?
There is no cost for adding or removing services later. Internet service is the only requirement.

Do I need to sign a contract?
No. At the time of installation customers are asked to sign the work order which acknowledges that they have read our terms and conditions, however we do not ask customers to sign a contract.

Will you install new wiring or use the wiring that exists in my home?
This depends on the wiring that is already in your home. If your home has relatively new wiring, we will use what is already there. If your home’s wiring is not capable of delivering the best quality from RST Internet, RST HD Video and RST Phone, we will replace the wiring that is currently running to your existing jacks.

How much does it cost to install service in additional rooms in my home?
With modern wireless technology a lot of what could only be done with a physical cable (coaxial, ethernet, etc) in the past, can more times than not, now be accomplished via wireless. This is particularly true with computers and phones.

If however your particular installation requires a cable to be run to a new location, the charge is $49 per outlet if completed at time of your initial install. If a separate trip is required the charge is $79 for the first outlet and $49 for each additional outlet.

Do I have to be home for the installation of my fiber optic service?
Yes when we need to access the interior of your residence, an adult (18 years or older) must be home at the time of installation. This person needs to be prepared to answer questions on locations of the devices you would like to provide RST access to.

Applications such as video conferencing require sufficient bandwidth in both directions, which RST provides.
